WHO WAS TILLIE?
Tillie was my great-grandmother. She moved to New York City from Bucharest in 1900. Her husband swept the streets of the city and died of tuberculosis at the age of 33, leaving Tillie to support her family alone. She worked long hours in a sweatshop and she ended her life by jumping off the roof of an 8-story building on Houston Street. We started Tillie's Dream to pay homage to her struggle and to live her unfulfilled desire for a better life.
